WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A WINDOW

You’ll often hear window experts refer to several key factors when discussing windows: U-Values, R-Values, and Low E. What do these terms mean?

The U-value measures the amount of heat that escapes through the window. The lower the U-value, the more energy efficient the window.

The R-value represents the opposite of the U-value. While not quite the exact inverse of a U-value, an R-value measures the resistance to heat flow through the window. R-values can be affected by the number of panes and the glazing. In general, High R-values and low U-values are a good thing.

Meaning Low Emissivity, Low E is a filter applied to the coating of the glass. It blocks UV rays as well as filters out the part of the light that transfers heat. Low E will lower the U-value and raise the R-value, increasing the overall efficiency of the window.
