Glass Option: Chipped Edge

           Shower Enclosures

CHIPPED EDGE

For a dramatic looking shower, you can add a chipped edge to your heavy glass shower enclosure. A "Chipped Edge" refers to the scalloped edge work on the glass.

Type of Chipped Edge Pattern

  • Double-Sided - The glass is chipped both directions, providing an attractive rough edge to the glass. Very non-symmetric.
  • Single-Sided - The glass is all chipped one direction

Type of Edge Cut
The shape of the edge of the glass.

  • Straight Cut - Typical cut on the glass. No charge.
  • Wave Cut - A smooth wave. You can specify the height of the waves and the distance between the peaks and valleys. There are limitations to the steepness of the waves. If they are too extreme, the glass will break when chipping it. Talk to us for full details.
  • Jagged Cut - A rougher random cut that complements the chipped edge pattern making it look like a broken edge.

Traditional heavy glass enclosures need to be made to order because even a 1/8" out of plumb can require custom glass. The TruFit enclosure utilizes custom jamb and channels to allow for easy, on-site adjustment to the wall and curb conditions.

Corner showers get the most use out of small bathrooms.

Today, bathroom appearance is much more important than in the past – and corner showers are used a design element.

These days, people look at showering areas in a different light, and the popularity of gorgeous shower glass continues to grow. For those that want to have a modern sleek bathroom with size restraints, corner shower enclosures are a perfect choice.

There are two basic designs in space-saving corner showers.

Traditional Corner Showers

Corner showers have two glass sides and two tiled sides.

Whether you have a swing door or sliding door, Cardinal has several series that can fit in a corner, whether you have a tub or not!

  • Cardinal Series
  • Craftsman Series
  • Euro Series

Neo Angle Shower Enclosures

Shower enclosures with angles have three glass panels in the front. The door is traditionally in the middle panel but can be on any one of the panels to accommodate ease of access. The front shape of a neo-angle shower enclosure is very similar to a bay window design and can add some real pizzazz to your bathroom.

Non-Traditional Corner Shower Enclosures

Considered "regular" shower enclosures, non-traditional corner showers make creative use of available space even in good size bathrooms.

One of the reasons that this are jumping up in popularity is the desire of consumers to have both a clean look shower enclosure and separate soaker/jacuzzi type tub.

With double vanities and two bathing fixtures, space becomes a premium.

Check out the design of this non traditional corner shower enclosure to the right for an idea as to what this can entail.

Discreet Shower Glass That Still Displays Your Gorgeous Tile

A sandblasted band over a clear glass shower door on our display.

A sandblasted band over a clear glass shower door on our display.

Clear glass is still far and away the primary choice of most homeowners when purchasing enclosures or doors.

There are two primary reasons for this.

    1. The first is fairly obvious: clear glass is the least expensive type of glass you can buy when purchasing shower glass.
    2. The second reason is to display the tile or marble that cost you quite a bit of money.

Most consumers rightfully think tile is a terrific looking product. You will get no argument from me on that score. Be it inside a shower enclosure or behind a shower or tub glass door, tile adds a lot of great elements to your bathroom. These elements can speak to elegance, cleanliness, sparkle, and beauty. Why cover over your gorgeous bathroom tile?

Well, as always, there are some concerns with clear glass.

Clear glass allows no privacy. In a multi-use bathroom, even when shared by spouses, there may be an issue regarding the view and exposure that comes along with clear shower glass. But who wants to hide all that tile that you love? Here is your solution – check the picture out on the right.

A sandblasted privacy door or enclosure by Cardinal Shower can show off the beauty of your tile or marble walls and floors but provides privacy when getting ready in the morning or before bed when there may be more than one person in the bathroom. Perfect for shower enclosures, tub doors, and shower doors, it allows the beauty of your whole bathroom to show through while being discreet.

Protecting Wavy and Stained Glass Windows With Custom Inside Storm Window Inserts

With the increasing popularity of double-pane insulated glass windows, the use of storm panels is declining. While a secondary storm window insert certainly adds to energy efficiency and comfort, few customers elect to use them over double pane insulated glass – but there are still customers that need that extra layer of glass for protection or comfort.

Common Uses of Interior Storm Windows

Older homes and buildings with gorgeous wavy glass

Most homes that have antique wavy glass are prized by their owners. Inside storm windows allow them to maintain the beauty of the windows and still be comfortable.

WAVY GLASS GUIDE
Did you know we stock six types of historic wavy glass? We can make storm windows and double pane insulated window glass with wavy glass. Check out our wavy glass guide.

Protecting Stained and Leaded Glass Windows

Have a beautiful stained glass window? Protect it with an interior storm panel. In this case, the storm panel serves as a sacrificial window that will break before that ball or broomstick hits the stained glass. Stained glass and leaded glass are all pretty much single-thick and hence, cold. You can protect your glass and get the warming benefit of a storm panel.

Keeping an office space warm and toasty with discreet interior storm windows while maintaining the gorgeous wavy glass windows.

Older drafty buildings and homes with rooms or additions at the end of the heating run

Have an office or room far from the boiler or furnace at your business or home? These rooms tend to heat slower and cool off faster than the rest of the building. Adding interior storms helps to even out the heat so that these chilly rooms are not so cold while waiting for the heat to come back on.

Materials used in Storm Window Panels

Annealed Glass

Annealed glass is the fancy name for regular glass. Most windows are made with annealed glass. If you went to a glass company and bought a pane of regular glass, you would end up with annealed.

Tempered Glass

Much stronger than annealed glass, tempered glass serves two purposes. It is much less likely to break due to its toughened quality and if it does break, the result is small pebbles of glass rather than dangerous shards. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass.

Patterned and Frosted Glass

Looking for some privacy or added design in an interior storm? You can create the look you want by choosing a variety of acid washed glass or patterned glass. We have a large assortment of obscure, semi obscure, vintage patterns, and modern patterned glass. You can view them here.

Acrylic and Polycarbonate

Sometimes referred to by their brand names of Plexiglas® and Lexan®, acrylic and polycarbonate have distinct advantages and disadvantages when used in storm windows. The main advantage is they are somewhat shatterproof and are widely used in group homes and institutions. They are lightweight and safer to remove and reinstall. However, most acrylics and polycarbonates need special cleaning agents and scratch much easier than glass. They are are more flexible than glass and in large sheets may need a stronger frame to maintain rigidity.

Inside storm windows greatly reduce drafts and outside road noise. They maintain the historical appearances on houses. Easy to clean and maintain, these windows will pay for themselves over time in energy savings. Perhaps more importantly, inside storm panels make you feel much warmer by stopping drafts at their source rather than trying to mask them with electric heaters.

It is not uncommon in New England offices to see electric heaters under desks in older buildings. The cost of wintertime electricity in New England is through the roof. Adding to the expense are the dangers of portable electric heaters. Employees and customers can trip on the heater or the cord. Some types of electric heaters, left unattended, present a fire hazard. A safer one-time investment in storm windows can accomplish more comfort than electric heaters without the dangers and liabilities.

Be comfortable with energy efficient inside storm windows.

ACRYLIC AND POLYCARBONATE GLASSLESS MIRRORS

Acrylic Mirrors, commonly referred to as plexiglass mirrors is a lightweight, somewhat flexible mirror that has much better impact resistance than glass mirrors and is very popular in areas where glass would be considered too dangerous. Home gyms, museums, trade show displays, and malls tend to use acrylic or polycarbonate mirrors. We carry a terrific brand of acrylic mirror known as Fabback by Plaskolite. Acrylic mirror is available in a variety of colors to meet any design application.

Polycarbonate Mirrors are extremely strong and durable mirrors used where there is a likelihood that glass mirrors will break and cause damage to individuals or animals. We think of polycarbonate mirrors as very muscular versions of acrylic mirrors. Polycarbonate mirrors are used in schools, stables, group homes, and prisons. Polycarbonate mirrors have extreme impact resistance.

           Glass

What is Laminated Glass?

The simple answer is that laminated glass is two layers of glass held together with an type of vinyl internally glued together.

The vinyl holds the glass in place when it is damaged to prevent injury. The most well known use of laminated glass is in automobile windshields. Imagine driving down the road with a windshield that broke apart when damaged. The invention of laminated glass has saved countless lives.

Another popular application is storefront and commercial door use. Laminated glass offers both safety and security. A burglar banging on laminated glass will have to work much harder and longer to gain access.

Pioneer Glass offers laminated glass for residential and commercial use. As a durable, high-performance product, it delivers sensational protection against anything the world can possibly throw at it. Laminated glass has long been a favored choice of manufactures who prefer the strength of glass and need a safe secure product. Even better, laminated glass helps reduce unwanted noise and impacts from solar energy.

Explaining Laminated Glass

Hurricanes? Tornadoes? Earthquakes? Laminate glass can protect against these threats – not just the gale-force winds or torrential rain, but also windborne debris. This particular glass can also hold strong against man-made threats we must all protect against even as we hope it never happens: forcible entry, gunfire, or bomb blasts. To distill it down, laminate glass is used when there is a possibility of human impact or where shattered glass could damage a person. That’s why skylights and auto windshields tend to be made out of laminated glass. Bullet-resistant glass is also created through laminate properties.

Laminate glass is a type of safety glass that holds together when shattered, through an interlayer of plastic between two or more layers of glass. This interlayer keeps the layers of glass bonded even when broken, preventing breakage into large sharp pieces. You’ll still see a spider web cracking pattern – it does break to some extent – but it will hold together. Other types of safety glass includes tempered glass, acrylic, and polycarbonate. Generally when the term ‘laminate’ is used in the glass world, annealed glass is the material but there are many uses for laminated acrylic and polycarbonate.

Here’s a video showing the difference in regular, tempered, and laminate glass:

Laminated glass comes in several different forms such as clear or white glass, insulated or tinted. Glass can also be created with holes, notches, and various edgework such as seamed or flat-polished edges. The glass comes 1/4″ thick – not the usual 1/8″ thick – due to the greater strength at a quarter-inch thickness. You can have many different custom shapes and sizes with laminated glass.

It’s safety glass to the next level. Two pieces of annealed glass are held together by a vinyl layer that will stay in place even with breakage, preventing shattering and sharp shards.

Noise and Light Protection

The world is loud. Help reduce unwanted outside noise by incorporating laminated glass into your plans. This can be particularly useful living in areas near traffic, highways, industry, airports, and more.

Laminate glass has been proven to reduce unwanted outside noises. If you combine it with an insulated glass unit, the benefits to your windows increase. Maximum sound protection is provided by double-laminated insulated units.

Laminated glass can also reduce the impact of solar energy. As light from the sun enters the home, solar energy can cause fading of fabric, furniture, and other materials. Single-pane clear glass cannot prevent fading – but laminated glass certainly can, with twice the fade protection of ordinary glass. Even better, the protection against fading will not affect plants inside the home, which can continue to grow and benefit from sunlight!

Examples

You can incorporate laminated glass into your home to ensure safety, such as in the following applications.

  • Skylight glass. Protect against a roofer’s foot going through the window, or a well-placed tree branch coming down in a storm. Near the shore, it helps save disaster from birds dropping shellfish on the roof. Generally, New England skylights are made with the top pane constructed of toughened tempered glass and the lower pane of laminated glass.
  • A glass tabletop sure to protect against any damage from your children wrestling despite being told not to. Instead of a well-placed flying elbow drop destroying your coffee table and putting your children at risk of cuts, the glass will hold together.
  • Protecting that valuable piece of artwork, whether a coloring your child brought home from kindergarten or a piece bought at an art exhibit. Laminate glass will make sure that nothing can damage a piece of artwork or photo. Even better, laminate glass’ reducing of solar energy will prevent fading.
  • Live near a highway? Getting laminated insulated-glass units will not only drown out noise, but will benefit your wallet with energy savings. Even better, fading of your rugs will be greatly reduced.
  • Have a backhoe or some other type of machinery you tinker around in in your backyard or farm? Laminate glass will ensure your machinery stands up to the elements.
  • If you have a shed you like to do carpenter’s work in, laminate glass will protect your windows shattering should you throw a hammer in frustration.
  • Balconies or fences. A popular application for homes along the coast, for example, is to have an all-glass fence around a porch to allow uninhibited views of the gorgeous ocean. Laminate glass will make sure the damage is limited from flying debris like a tree limb.
  • Manufacturing. A favored choice for products that have the natural scratch resistance of glass compared to acrylic or polycarbonate.
  • Commercial applications include storefronts to protect against inclement weather or man-made threats.
  • Should your business specialize in highly coveted assets, rest assured that laminate glass cannot be cut through from one side only. Glasscutters are out of luck.
