THE ENCLOSURE

Enclosures influence the cost, design, and structure of your new shower experience. The three main types of enclosures are frameless, semi-frameless, and framed showers.

THE GLASS

There are so many options for glass, it's hard to know where to start. That's where we come in – consider thickness and type of glass. But wait – it doesn't stop there.

THE DOOR

Space, upkeep, cost, appearance, and compatibility with the enclosure, glass, and hardware are all important factors to keep in mind with your shower's door.

THE ACCESSORIES

Towel bars. Pulls. Hinges. Surface protectants. Hardware adds the proper finishing touches, while other accessories impact your experience.

HEADERS

Some shower enclosures require a top header for stability – they do not spoil the look of the shower.

Headers are generally used when a glass panel is attached to an adjoining glass door. As the door moves, the glass panel is being asked to carry the weight of the shower door.

A header helps relieve tension to prevent weakening of the panel, door, and connection over time.

HANDLES, PULLS AND KNOBS

Shower glass hardware knobs, pulls, and pull handles come in many different finishes to fit your designed bathroom look.

  • Knobs offer a small, unobtrusive way to open and close a shower. They are a traditional option offering both simplicity and enough leverage to move the door.
  • Pulls are quite modern and tend to be used with a recessed finger: you put your finger inside the pull and use it to move the door. Pulls can be combined with a towel bar.
  • Pull handles are more overt and there are lot of varieties of handles in styles, shapes, and colors. You can get handles in metal or even glass.

TOWEL BARS

Towel bars are most traditionally placed on the exterior shower door but in some instances, interior bars are possible. Towel bars can also be integrated with pulls and pull handles to reduce the amount of separate hardware on the shower door.

Towel bars are not a necessity – you can have an alternate solution, whether hooks or a mounted bar on an exterior wall, shower wall, or shower door. Keep in mind the towel bar – and towels that will go on that bar – matter in aesthetics.

HINGES

Traditional hinges act like a door in your home – two or three separate hinges spread out. Continuous hinges run the length of the door with a self-centering mechanism to return to a closed position. Hinges are a frequent component of heavy glass shower enclosures.

Hinges can have stops removed to swing in and out; most customers elect for the door to swing out only. One advantage to a double swing is that you can open the door in the inward position to drip dry. Doors that only swing inward are not up to national building codes.

Exposure Testing Shower Enclosure Glass ShowerGuard

TREATED OR UNTREATED GLASS

Surface Treatment
Adding a surface protectant to a shower enclosure during installation reduces cleaning frequency and intensity. Surface protectants come with a 10-year warranty and repel water, oil, and is resistant to UV exposure. You can view manufacturer information, recommendations, and a FAQ here.

Manufactured Glass Protection

Water contains many minerals which can slowly pit and discolor glass. For the most maintenance-free shower glass, the permanent protective layer of Guardian Showerguard® will hold up for years and years.

           Shower Enclosures

When it comes time to determine the type of shower door for your enclosure, there are a few key things to keep in mind.

SPACE

Swing doors must have clearance to toilets and sinks. Sliding doors will not open sufficiently to work in small shower stalls. Knowing the space you have to work with is key to your selection.

UPKEEP

The more track you have, the more cleaning you will have to do. That said, current tracking systems are more upkeep-friendly and are much easier to keep clean than older versions.

COST

Framed doors of any kind tend to be the least expensive, as you can use thinner glass. The frame, rather than the glass and supports, contributes to the structural strength of the door.

APPEARANCE

Many would argue appearance is the most important factor of all. You are spending a lot of effort and money on your shower enclosure. At the end of the day, make sure it is what you love.

SLIDING DOORS

Choose from both sides sliding on a track, or one side as fixed glass. Modern tracks, easy to clean. have a track with drip (weep) holes to drain water. Sliding doors are key when mounted over tubs. There are also trackless sliding doors, an upper-end feature. These doors are made of thicker glass with astrong upper track to carry the weight.

Modern shower tracking for sliding doors
Shower Enclosure Hinge Door

SWING HINGED DOORS

The most popular choice of all. Traditional hinges work similar to the doors of your home, where several pieces are affixed to the side. Continuous hinges run the length of the door's side. This type of hinge has a self centering mechanism to always return to a closed position. Continuous hinges are used when walls are "out of square."

SWING PIVOT DOORS

Pivot doors, swinging on the top and bottom, allows a very clean and sleek look. Most require less screw holes and are easier to open. Think of your refrigerator with no visible hinges – it has pivots at the top and bottom. Many doors with pivot-type hinges also have a continuous hinge that runs in a hidden rod in the trim for extra support.

Shower enclosure pivot hinge door

Hinge and pivot doors, in many cases, can have stops removed to swing in and out like saloon-type doors. Most customers prefer to leave the stops in and have the doors swing out. One advantage to a double swing is that you can open the door in the inward position to drip dry. Doors that swing inward only are not allowed by national building codes. Determining which type of hinge to choose for your shower door includes various factors.

           Restoration Glass

Restover® (Light)Plus: Historic Wavy Glass for Buildings and Homes Built in the 1920s Through the 1950s

Restover® (Light) restoration glass matches buildings with the Fourcault and Colburn processes. This glass is still widely seen throughout America. Restover® (light) has minor distortion (wave). This distortion is more visible when driving by or when viewing a reflection off of the glass.

Fantastic Glass for Major Restoration Projects

Restover® (light) is available in sizes up to approximately 59 by 63”. It is manufactured using the Fourcault process and is 2.75mm thick.

For more information on Restover® (light) and our other types of restoration glass please watch our video.

           Restoration Glass

Restover® Plus: Historic Glass For Turn of the Century Buildings and Homes

Restover® Plus is a Fourcault process glass that very closely matches the distortion of latter stage mouth-blown glass.

While lacking the air bubbles and pitting common in this era, from more than five feet away it is virtually indistinguishable. It has a slight ream and is 2.95mm thick.

Fantastic Glass for Major Restoration Projects

Restover® Plus is very flexible for larger restorations with it’s larger sheet size of approximately 59” X 63”. It is much less brittle than mouth-blown glass and is less expensive. This is our number one seller in restoration glass.

For better views of all types of our restoration glass, watch our video.

           Restoration Glass

Goetheglas: Restoration Drawn Glass For Historic Buildings

Goetheglas is a gorgeous Fourcault process drawn glass manufactured in Germany. From the manufacturer:

Historical in form, innovative in function, GOETHEGLAS is a colorless, drawn glass with the irregular surface characteristic of window glass common to the 18th and 19th centuries.

We find Goetheglas to be spectacular in larger windows. Thicker than most restoration glass at 4.5 mm, this glass has almost a dreamy appearance in larger panes.

You can see more images of Goetheglas as well as our other types of historic wavy glass in our video

           Restoration Glass

P1 Restoration Mouth-blown Wavy Glass For Historic 1800s Era Buildings.

P1 glass is a mouth-blown cylinder glass made in Europe today.

Handmade by glass smiths to be a true replica of the cylinder glass in wide use in America from the 1850s through the early 1900s.

It has all the classic imperfections of cylinder glass with dispersed small air bubbles, an occasional flat line, minor pitting, and every so often a dimple. It’s ream (unevenness) is almost imperceptible.

Matches the Cylinder Glass in Late 1800s to early 1900s Antique Homes

In addition to the mouth-blown glass of this era, P1 is also a good match for other glass that was in use including machine drawn cylinder glass and early stage Fourcault / Colburn glass.

For better views of all types of our restoration glass, watch our video.

           Restoration Glass

P3 Restoration Mouth-blown Wavy Glass For Historic 1700s Era Buildings

1700s Crown Glass is the gorgeous handmade mouth-blown glass found in structures remaining that predate the late 1700s. This type of glass is well known for it’s deep curved lines. Very reamy (uneven) and with classic distortion this is a showpiece glass used for antique home glass restoration and cabinet glass.

Matches the Crown Glass in 1700s Antique Homes

Mouth-blown and cut by hand today, P3 glass is made by glass smiths in Europe.

Available in sizes up to 37”.

P2 Restoration Mouth-blown Wavy Glass For Historic Windows and Furniture Late 1700s to Mid 1800s, Crown Glass Replica of 1800s Homes

           Restoration Glass

P2 Restoration Mouth-blown Wavy Glass For Historic Windows and Furniture Late 1700s to Mid 1800s, Crown Glass Replica of 1800s Homes

Most of the better homes in the late 1700’s through the mid 1800s used Crown Glass. Considered clearer and better than Cylinder Glass, the Crown Glass of this era had sweeping curved lines, moderate ream (unevenness) , moderate distortion, and some air bubbles. Most air bubbles were of seed size but some were quite large reaching up to a quarter coin size.

Matches the Crown Glass in 1800s Antique Homes

Glass with this appearance is still being made in Europe by artisans using historic methods. P2 is mouthblown, handmade, and hand cut to match perfectly with your latter stage Crown Glass. Each pane is unique, just like the glass in your historic home.

Available in sizes up to 37”.

Thin Glass Pattern Shower Enclosures - Reeded, pattern example

           Shower Enclosures

GLASS THICKNESS

Shower glass comes in a variety of thicknesses generally ranging from 5/32” to 1/2”. The thicker the glass, the more expensive it is to fabricate and ship.

1/2"

1/2" thickness glass is considered attractive and elegant – many luxury hotels and high-end custom showers use 1/2". It is heavy and may require extra support in the wall and hinges. The hinges may not last as long due to the stress placed on them by the weight of the glass.

3/8"

Most semi-framed and frameless shower enclosures end up with the 3/8" thickness. This balances cost and appearance. 3/8" is a typical glass thickness, but may require a top header to give stability to the whole unit. These headers do not spoil the look of the shower.

1/4"

For high-quality framed enclosures, 1/4" is a popular choice. The thinness of the glass can really make a shower enclosure stand out. Framed shower glass can be thinner than framless and semi-framed due to the structural support of the metal frame.

CLEAR vs. LOW-IRON GLASS

Traditional clear shower glass is the most popular glass used for enclosures and doors. It is not quite clear, despite the name – it has a slight green tint due to the iron in the materials used to make the glass.

For super clarity in any glass product, select low-iron glass. This is truly clear glass. This glass is magnificent for showing your gorgeous marble or tile. This allows your shower enclosure to truly shine, but comes at a higher cost.

GLASS VARIETIES

There are variety of enhancements you can make to your glass beyond thickness and type of glass.

Pioneer Glass can help create the shower you desire.

Thin Glass Pattern Shower Enclosures - Obscure, shower enclosure example

           Uncategorized

There are many different types of shower enclosures you can purchase, with many variables within including glass thickness, design, accessories, and more. As you compare quotes for various shower enclosures, be sure you are accounting for why there are differences in price as you review your options.

There are two key decisions you need to make with the enclosure. Let's go through them.

SWING OR SLIDING DESIGN

Do you swing, or do you slide? Determining how the function of your glass shower door will operate will inform the rest of your decisions. Determining if you want the door to swing open or slide back and forth influences the options you have available for your shower enclosure design. Not only do you need to account for personal preference, the constraints of your bathroom may influence your decision – and sometimes, the bathroom dimensions will make the choice for you.

THE FRAME DESIGN

When deciding whether to have a framed or a frameless glass for your shower door, consider the overall feel of your bathroom. Oftentimes, people do not account for the shower enclosure design when designing a bathroom. This is a vital step that should not be overlooked. As the focal piece in the bathroom, the shower enclosure you pick will go a long way in defining your bathroom experience.

The current trend is to have custom frameless shower glass because it helps make the bathroom feel spacious and has a spa-like vibe. However, semi-frameless and framed enclosures bring a lot to the table as well. The choice depends on preferred glass thickness and design preference.

Frameless Shower Enclosure example

FRAMELESS

The most popular (and expensive) option; attached by hinges only. It may have a metal u-channel (secures panels; reduces cost) to adapt to imperfections and a header or support arm for safety. Easiest to clean and stays clean – minimal areas for water to collect.

SEMI-FRAMELESS

Metal around the entire structure, but not the door (unless at the bottom to control drip). It uses thinner glass, as some frame helps support the enclosure. Thinner glass also reduces cost. Semi-frameless options adapt to walls that are not quite square.

FRAMED

Metal around the entire structure including the door. This provides maximum stability and makes the most use of the the available space in this bathroom. Usually the least expensive – and sturdiest – option. They can be very attractive if utilized correctly.

What is a Shower Screen?

You may at times see the term "shower screen" in your research. This is just another way of referring to a shower enclosure. The reasons for this term are:

  • Originally, a shower screen was a fixed piece of glass protecting the front half to three-quarters of the shower. The back portion or entrance is left open for access without a door. This is still very popular in Europe and in areas such as the mid-east and South America where European design is popular.
  • In Europe, the word screen is used differently than in the U.S. The Brits do not say "windshield" – they use the word "windscreen." It's the same with a shower enclosure; they refer to it as a shower screen.

           Shower Enclosures

Cast Glass Shower Enclosure - Neo - PalmWhen building a new shower or renovating an old one, the type of door or enclosure is always a primary consideration.  Full glass shower doors have been around for quite some time, but they are as popular as ever.  There is always something about the glass being used to enclose the shower area that makes it so much more appealing.  These glass shower doors have evolved from the very minimalistic and utilitarian part of the shower installation to be the centerpiece of an artistically rendered shower area, a modern-day must-have especially to those who are so keen on maintaining an image in their households.

Full glass shower doors are custom-made.  This makes them fit perfectly in the design of the shower installation. You are not limited by standard sizing and form since they are made from scratch according to design specifications.  These specific glass shower doors are made from thicker glass. And since they are made of thicker glass, this makes them sturdier without the benefit of using metal frames, rubber seals, or gaskets.  The result is a clean, perfectly fitting full glass shower door that is not only functional but exuding beauty and style.  There are no additional fittings or trimmings that become an eyesore in the long run.  An intricately designed tile work will also benefit from these glass shower doors since it can be seen unobstructed and can, therefore, be showcased in a shower installation.

These specific shower doors are also safe to use since they are almost always made from tempered glass. This type of glass is designed to shatter into very small pieces should it for some reason break.  So the likelihood of suffering from a big cut is zero to none.  Another plus of using tempered glass for shower doors is that it is less likely to develop mold compared to its framed counterpart.  These glass shower doors have a very little area where water can collect and remain long enough for molds to grow.  They are easier to clean and they stay clean.  A sponge and a squeegee are all that’s needed to keep the glass shower doors crystal clear.

Investing in glass shower boxes can create a sense of a more open and seamless area that is not only visually pleasing but also relaxing.  They offer a sense of elegance not present in any other shower enclosure systems.  By being “invisible” and lacking in visual input, these glass shower doors add visual space as far as the bathroom area is concerned, by eliminating the sense of boundaries.

Full glass shower doors have the ability to transform an ordinary bathroom or shower installation into a luxurious and relaxing space.  With a host of modern-design offerings, these glass shower doors are sure to give a significant change in the look and feel of any shower installation.  Moreover, these shower doors are also a great way to make shower installations ageless as they can be made at the same level as the shower floor allowing unhindered access to the shower even during our golden years when we find ourselves less mobile.

Glass Option: Chipped Edge

           Shower Enclosures

CHIPPED EDGE

For a dramatic looking shower, you can add a chipped edge to your heavy glass shower enclosure. A "Chipped Edge" refers to the scalloped edge work on the glass.

Type of Chipped Edge Pattern

  • Double-Sided - The glass is chipped both directions, providing an attractive rough edge to the glass. Very non-symmetric.
  • Single-Sided - The glass is all chipped one direction

Type of Edge Cut
The shape of the edge of the glass.

  • Straight Cut - Typical cut on the glass. No charge.
  • Wave Cut - A smooth wave. You can specify the height of the waves and the distance between the peaks and valleys. There are limitations to the steepness of the waves. If they are too extreme, the glass will break when chipping it. Talk to us for full details.
  • Jagged Cut - A rougher random cut that complements the chipped edge pattern making it look like a broken edge.

TRUFIT SERIES

The remarkable new 3/8" clear glass TruFit enclosure is easy to install in as little as an hour, has lots of adjustment, and can even go on a fiberglass unit. Traditional heavy glass enclosures need to be made to order because even a 1/8" out of plumb can require custom glass. The TruFit enclosure utilizes custom jamb and channels to allow for easy, on-site adjustment to the wall and curb conditions.

Cardinal S-Curve - Detail. The glass overlaps one to three inches

           Shower Enclosures

The Cardinal S-Curve is a popular option for adding flair and style to a simple slider. It surprised even us how the simple change dramatically changed the look and feel of the unit.

While the S-Curve is available in our full range of 1/4” or 3/8” glass patterns, from clear to our luxurious Venetian Cast Glass, for the most dramatic effect, we recommend using clear glass which highlights the edge.

  • Stock and custom sizes available
  • Glass overlaps 1” to 3”
  • Installs as easily as our Euro unit with one additional bumper
  • Available with our new Recessed Finger Pull
  • Available with custom etching to highlight the curve
